The Boafeng UV-5R dual band handheld radio.

The Baofeng UV 5r series of radios are a great deal on a dual band two way radio, whether it is used for public service or amateur radio. It can also be used as a police and fire department scanner saving the time of finding police scanners on sale and surfing through hundreds of pages trying to save a buck or two. Although they were not designed to be used as police scanners they are perfectly capable of accomplishing this, although not with all the features one might expect from a full blown desktop scanner in the $500 dollar range.

The Baofeng UV-5R radios are a great deal and can serve many purposes, just be sure to remember that it is not legal to transmit on these radios with out the proper licensing from the FCC here in the US. That being said, if you were in a life or death emergency or a SHTF scenario then it may be perfectly legal to transmit on the radio to call for help. Carrying the Baofeng UV-5R series of radio in your grab and go bag eliminates the need to carry multiple radios as well. As any prepper knows, when the SHTF and our Government completely collapses then almost anything goes to survive, and I don’t think the FCC will be too bothered if you and your small group are using communications devices that aren’t FCC approved.

I have a strong passion for all things radio. When I am not writing about different types of radio gear, I am out in the shack working the world on the HF bands, or troubleshooting an older shortwave radio.
